Which suitcase size do you need?

Suitcases in Kenya are usually sold by height in inches. Before you compare prices, choose the right size so you do not pay for space you will not use, or end up with a bag that is too small.

If you travel with family or several times a year, a set that includes all three sizes is usually better value than buying the pieces one at a time.

What affects the price of a suitcase?

Two suitcases of the same size can differ in price by several thousand shillings. These are the main reasons.

1. Shell material

Hard-shell suitcases made from rubber-type plastic or polypropylene flex under pressure and spring back, which helps them survive airport handling. Rigid fibre shells are lighter but can crack if they are hit hard. Soft fabric bags and trolley duffels cost less and squeeze into tight spaces, but protect fragile items less well.

2. Wheels

Four 360° spinner wheels let you push the suitcase beside you with almost no weight on your arm. Two-wheel trolley bags are cheaper and handle rough pavements and matatu stages better, but you have to pull them behind you.

3. Locks

A built-in TSA lock lets airport security open and relock the case without breaking it, which matters for travel to and through the USA. Premium sets with TSA locks sit at the top of the price range.

4. Expandable zip and inner organisation

An expandable zip adds a few centimetres of space for shopping on the way home. Inner dividers, compression straps and zipped pockets keep clothes tidy and add to the cost.

5. Single suitcase or set

Sets cost more upfront but less per piece. For example, a large 30″ hard-shell suitcase costs KSh 10,099 on its own, while a full three-piece set starts at KSh 12,999.

Hard-shell or soft suitcase: which is better value?

Choose a hard-shell suitcase if you are flying, checking in luggage or carrying anything fragile. The shell protects what is inside, is easy to wipe clean and is harder to cut open.

Choose a soft trolley bag or duffel if you mostly travel by bus or car, need to squeeze the bag into tight spaces, or want the lowest price. Fabric bags also have outside pockets for things you need on the road.

Many Kenyan travellers own one of each: a large hard-shell suitcase for flights and a trolley duffel for upcountry and weekend trips.

How to check a suitcase’s quality before you buy

  1. Roll it. Push it across the floor in every direction. Spinner wheels should turn smoothly and quietly without wobbling.
  2. Test the handle. Extend and retract the telescopic handle several times. It should lock firmly at each height and not rattle.
  3. Press the shell. A good hard shell flexes slightly and springs back. Avoid shells that dent or crack easily.
  4. Check the zips. Run the zip all the way round. Large, smooth zips last longer than thin ones.
  5. Look inside. Check the lining stitching, the straps and the dividers.
  6. Lift it empty. A lighter suitcase leaves more of your airline weight allowance for your belongings.

At our Nairobi CBD shop you can test every one of these points in person before you buy.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a suitcase in Kenya?

A single large hard-shell spinner suitcase costs about KSh 7,999 to KSh 10,099. Budget rolling duffels start from KSh 2,499, and complete three- or four-piece sets cost about KSh 12,999 to KSh 15,999.

What is the best suitcase size for international travel?

For a checked bag, a medium 24″–26″ or large 27″–30″ suitcase works for most trips. Pair it with a small cabin-size bag, and check your airline’s size and weight limits before you pack.

Is a luggage set better value than a single suitcase?

If you need more than one bag, yes. A three-piece set starts at KSh 12,999, only a little more than a single 30″ suitcase at KSh 10,099.

Are hard-shell suitcases worth the extra cost?

For flying, usually yes. They protect your belongings better, resist water and are harder to break into than fabric bags.

Do you deliver suitcases outside Nairobi?

Yes, we deliver across Kenya. Delivery within Nairobi CBD is free. For other areas we confirm the fee by phone before dispatch, based on your location and the size of the suitcase. Read our delivery policy for details.

Final word

For most people, the best value is either a large hard-shell spinner suitcase for around KSh 8,000–KSh 10,000, or a three-piece set from KSh 12,999 if more than one person travels. Browse our suitcases in Kenya, or call or WhatsApp 0717 586 106 and we will help you choose.
